The Hands That Hold the Trench
The fitting room at Burberry's Castleford facility smells faintly of cotton gabardine and machine oil. On the table: a half-finished trench coat, sleeves pinned but not set, storm shield tacked in place with silk thread the colour of weak tea. The woman holding the shears is Janet Moorhouse. She has been cutting trenches here for thirty-two years.
Moorhouse does not work alone. The coat on the table will pass through eleven pairs of hands before it reaches a customer. Most of those hands belong to people who have never given an interview, never appeared in a campaign, and would not recognise Daniel Lee if he walked past them in the canteen. This is not romantic. It is simply how the thing gets made.
The trench coat is Burberry's signature piece, the garment that survived two world wars, a decade of chav-panic tabloid coverage, and several creative directors who wanted very badly to make it go away. It has not gone away. Last year the house produced roughly 400,000 of them. Each one requires between four and six hours of labour, depending on the model. The Heritage trench—the one with the full complement of D-rings, storm shield, and throat latch—takes longer.
The Cut
Moorhouse learned to cut at a technical college in Leeds in the late eighties, when pattern-making was still done on paper and most of her classmates were aiming for bridal or eveningwear. She took a job at Burberry's Yorkshire factory in 1992, the year the company moved its trench production from London to Castleford. The factory employed 350 people then. It employs just under 200 now, but the output has doubled.
She works from a pattern that has been adjusted, incrementally, since the 1920s. The adjustments are small: a quarter-inch added to the armscye in 2003 to accommodate American customers, a slight narrowing of the sleeve head in 2018 when Lee arrived and wanted a cleaner shoulder line. The core geometry has not changed. Two front panels, two back, a yoke, a storm shield, ten buttons, and a belt that most customers will knot instead of buckle because they have never been shown how the buckle works.
Moorhouse cuts twelve coats a day. She does not cut them all at once. Gabardine shifts when you stack it, so she works in pairs, sometimes threes. The cutting table is eight feet long. She stands at one end and works her way down, rotary cutter in her right hand, left hand flat on the cloth to keep it from moving. She has been doing this long enough that she no longer needs to measure twice.
The cloth itself comes from a mill in West Yorkshire that Burberry has worked with since 1968. The gabardine is a tight twill weave, 11oz for the standard trench, 13oz for the car coat. It arrives in sixty-yard bolts, already proofed with a water-repellent finish that will last through twenty or thirty washes if you do not dry-clean it. Most customers dry-clean it.
The Assembly
Once Moorhouse has cut a coat, it moves to the machining floor. This is where the noise starts. Thirty industrial sewing machines running at once, plus the hiss of the steam presses and the clatter of the buttonhole station. The woman at the first machine is called Diane. She has been setting sleeves for nineteen years. Before that she made hospital scrubs in Wakefield.
Setting a sleeve into a trench coat is not the same as setting a sleeve into a shirt. The armscye is deeper, the sleeve head has more ease, and the shoulder seam sits half an inch back from where you expect it. This is intentional. It allows the coat to move when you raise your arm to hail a taxi or check your watch, and it stops the shoulder from collapsing when you wear it over a suit jacket. Diane sets forty sleeves a day. She can tell within three stitches if the ease is distributed correctly.
The storm shield is attached by a machinist named Pauline, who joined Burberry in 1987 and has never worked anywhere else. The shield is a separate panel that buttons across the right shoulder and down the front, creating a double layer of cloth over the chest. It serves no function in civilian life. It was designed to keep rain out of the coat when you were standing in a trench, holding a rifle. Customers do not know this, but they notice when it is missing.
The belt loops are sewn by hand. So are the underarm vents, which are reinforced with a bar tack that will outlast the gabardine itself. This work is done by a team of five finishers, all women, all over fifty. They sit at a long table near the back of the factory, under fluorescent lights that make the thread look greener than it is. They do not speak much while they work. Radio 2 plays in the background.
The Finish
The final stop is the pressing station, where a man named Colin has been working since 2001. He presses each coat twice: once after the lining goes in, once after the buttons are attached. The press is a industrial steam unit that runs at 180 degrees and produces enough moisture to wilt the collar of your shirt if you stand too close. Colin works in short sleeves year-round.
He handles each coat the same way: left shoulder first, then right, then the back yoke, then the sleeves, then the skirt. He does not press the belt. The belt is supposed to look slightly rumpled, as though you have just untied it. This is in the manual.
When Colin is finished, the coat goes to quality control, where a woman named Shareen checks the stitching, the button tension, and the alignment of the tartan lining. She rejects about one coat in thirty, usually for a tension issue in the sleeve or a misaligned pleat in the back. Rejected coats go back to the machining floor. They do not leave the factory until Shareen has signed the inspection slip.
Burberry does not advertise this process. The company's campaigns feature models in trenches on empty beaches or rain-slicked streets, looking as though they have never been cold or late or unable to find a taxi. The campaigns do not mention Janet Moorhouse or Diane or Pauline or Colin or Shareen. They do not mention Castleford.
But the coats still carry their names, in a sense. Every trench that leaves the factory has a small label sewn into the inside pocket, just below the tartan lining. The label lists the style number, the size, and a four-digit code that corresponds to the team that made it. If you know how to read the code, you can trace the coat back to the day it was cut, the machinist who set the sleeves, the finisher who sewed the vents.
Most customers do not know the code exists. They buy the coat because it is a Burberry trench, because it looks correct, because it does not require thought. They do not think about Castleford or the eleven pairs of hands or the thirty-two years Janet Moorhouse has spent cutting the same pattern. They think about rain, and whether the belt should be knotted or buckled.
Moorhouse prefers the buckle.
