The office is not a costume party, but it is also not a courtroom

The office is not a costume party, but it is also not a courtroom. Miu Miu understands this better than most houses pretending to do workwear. The maison has never made a blazer that looks like it came from a corporate catalogue, and it has never pretended that women dress only to be taken seriously. The friction is this: you want to wear the ballet flat, the low-slung skirt, the knit that sits off one shoulder. You also have a meeting at two.

This is not about dressing down Miu Miu. It is about choosing the pieces that already live in both registers.

The flat that isn't casual

Miu Miu's ballet flat from the past three seasons does more work than any pump. The toe is slightly squared. The strap crosses the instep at an angle that reads as considered, not sweet. It comes in patent, in cracked leather, in black that doesn't look like you're trying to match your trousers.

The key is proportion. Wear it with a hemline that ends above the ankle or below the calf. The flat collapses if you pair it with a midi that cuts you mid-shin. It works under cropped trousers in gabardine or wool, the kind that show the ankle bone and stop. It works under a long skirt if the skirt has weight and falls without gathering.

This is the shoe you wear when loafers feel too menswear and heels feel like you're performing. Patent works better than suede for this purpose. Suede softens. Patent holds the line.

The skirt with a waistband you can trust

Miu Miu's pleated skirts from the past two years sit low, but not so low that you spend the day adjusting. The waistband is grosgrain-backed. It stays. The pleats are stitched down for the first few inches, which means the skirt doesn't flare until mid-thigh. This is what makes it work in a meeting.

Pair it with a thin rollneck, tucked, in merino or cotton. The tuck is not optional. A loose knit over a low-rise skirt reads as weekend, and the office will read it that way too. The skirt works in navy, in charcoal, in the deep brown Miu Miu has been using since spring. It does not work in the pastel versions unless your office has no dress code at all, in which case you are not reading this for guidance.

The length matters. You want knee or just below. The mini exists, and it is perfect for dinner, but it does not solve the problem this article is addressing.

The knit that covers your shoulders

Miu Miu makes cardigans that button to the collarbone. They are cropped, but not so cropped that they show skin when you sit. The proportion works because the buttons are small and the placket is narrow. It looks like a shell with sleeves, not like something you borrowed from your grandmother.

Wear it over a slip dress in silk crepe, the kind that could be a skirt and a camisole if you separated them in your mind. The cardigan makes the slip read as a layer, not as lingerie. This is the move: take the piece that is too much on its own and give it structure with something fitted and opaque.

The cardigan works in black, in cream, in grey that is almost blue. It does not work in argyle or in anything with a large-scale pattern. Miu Miu's jacquard knits are beautiful, but they are not for this purpose.

The trouser that is not trying to be masculine

Miu Miu's low-rise trousers in cotton twill or lightweight wool are cut with a straight leg and a hem that breaks once at the shoe. They sit two inches below your natural waist, which is low enough to feel like Miu Miu and high enough that you are not pulling them up all day.

Pair them with a fitted shirt in poplin, tucked. The shirt should have a collar and long sleeves. This is not the place for the cropped blouse or the tie-front. The trousers are already doing the work of looking like themselves. The shirt is there to anchor.

The trouser works in khaki, in black, in navy. It works with the ballet flat. It works with a loafer if the loafer is slim and lacks decoration. It does not work with a sneaker unless your office is a creative studio, and even then it is a risk.

The bag that holds a laptop

Miu Miu's top-handle bags in matelassé leather are smaller than they look in photographs. The structure is there, but the capacity is not. For work, you want the Arcadie bag or one of the newer totes in smooth calfskin. They fit a thirteen-inch laptop, a notebook, a wallet, and the cardigan you will need when the air conditioning is set to freeze.

The bag should not have charms. It should not have a logo larger than the discreet plate Miu Miu uses on most of its structured styles. The work bag is not the place for irony.

What not to do

Do not wear the micro mini skirt to the office and expect the cardigan to solve it. Do not wear the platform Mary Jane unless you work somewhere that does not notice shoes. Do not carry the Wander bag with the shearling trim, no matter how much you love it.

Do not try to make the sequined pieces work for daytime. Miu Miu's evening knits are evening knits.

Most importantly: do not dress like you are apologising for liking Miu Miu. The house makes clothes for women who know exactly what they are doing. Wear them that way.
