## The Suitcase Test
The Suitcase Test
Travel reveals what a garment actually is. The wrinkles that appear after six hours in a roller bag. The hem that catches on a cobblestone. The jacket that reads as costume the moment you step off a plane into different air.
Miu Miu makes clothes that photograph well, which is not the same as clothes that travel well. But five pieces from recent collections pass the suitcase test. They fold without complaint. They adjust to context. They work in the humidity of a June afternoon in Puglia and again at a bistro table in Paris after dark.
The Poplin Shirt with Volume at the Sleeve
The Spring 2024 collection included an oversized poplin shirt with exaggerated cuffs and a clean collar. It is cut large through the body and reads as either a shirt or a short dress depending on what you wear beneath it.
Poplin survives compression. The fabric releases wrinkles with steam from a shower or fifteen minutes on a hanger. The volume at the sleeve is structural, not decorative—the shape holds without starch or ironing.
Wear it over a slip dress in linen. Wear it open over a ribbed tank and trousers. Wear it alone with flat sandals if the day is warm and the evening is casual. The shirt does not need anything else to justify itself, which makes it useful in a rotation of four or five pieces.
It comes in white and in a pale grey-blue. Choose the blue. White poplin shows every coffee spill and every brushstroke of sunscreen transferred from your collarbone.
The Nappa Leather Ballet Flat
Miu Miu's ballet flat from the past two seasons has become visible enough that it no longer requires explanation. The elastic strap. The slightly squared toe. The flat sole with no arch support and no padding.
It is not a comfortable shoe. But it is a compact shoe. Two pairs—one black, one in tobacco or bordeaux—fit into the gaps around packed clothing. The leather is soft enough that the shoe does not require breaking in, which matters when you are walking eight kilometres through a city you do not know.
The strap keeps the shoe on your foot without tightness. You can wear it for four hours and then switch to sneakers without blisters forming in the interim. That is the functional threshold.
The flat works with cropped trousers, with midi skirts, with dresses that end above the ankle. It does not work with anything that pools at the floor. The proportions collapse.
The Washed Denim Skirt, Knee-Length
Miu Miu has shown denim skirts in several lengths over the past three years. The knee-length version—not mini, not maxi—is the one that adapts.
The wash matters. Look for denim that has been treated to soften the hand. Rigid denim does not fold well and takes up more room than it should. The washed finish also removes the newness, which is useful. A skirt that already looks worn does not suffer from being worn further.
The waistband sits low on the hips. The hem is even, not distressed. There are no embellishments. This makes the skirt a neutral, which is what you need in a five-piece wardrobe.
Pair it with the poplin shirt. Pair it with a fine-knit sweater in merino if you are travelling in autumn. Pair it with a plain white t-shirt and the ballet flats. The skirt recedes enough to let other pieces speak, but it holds a line. That is the balance.
The Cropped Cardigan in Cashmere Blend
Miu Miu's knitwear tends toward the shrunken and the cropped. This is a liability in winter and an advantage in transit. A cropped cardigan in a cashmere blend takes up a quarter of the space of a full-length knit and covers the same amount of practical need.
The cardigan from Fall 2023—short sleeves, ribbed cuffs, buttons in tonal resin—layers over sleeveless dresses and under lightweight jackets. It provides warmth in air conditioning. It provides a second texture when an outfit has become too flat.
Cashmere blends travel better than pure cashmere. They pill less. They hold their shape after being folded and unfolded. They do not require the same degree of care.
Choose a cardigan in charcoal, navy, or camel. Avoid pastels unless you are prepared to wash them by hand in a hotel sink.
The Nylon Mini Bag with Chain Strap
Miu Miu's nylon bags are lighter and less precious than the leather versions. The mini size—just wide enough for a phone, a card case, and a lipstick—functions as an evening bag and a day bag depending on what you attach it to.
The chain strap is long enough to wear crossbody. This matters when you are moving through a train station or a market and need both hands free. The nylon is water-resistant, which matters when it rains and you have no umbrella.
The bag does not photograph as well as leather. It does not signal in the same way. But it weighs almost nothing, and it does not require thought. That is worth more than signalling.
What Not to Do
Do not bring the embellished pieces. No sequins, no feathers, no appliqué. They do not survive the suitcase, and they do not adapt to multiple contexts.
Do not bring more than one bag. You will carry the same one every day.
Do not bring shoes you have not already walked in for at least two hours. The trip is not the place to test new leather.
