Celine is cutting shoulders wide and low this season. The sleeve head sits a half-inch below the natural shoulder point, and the jacket extends past it by two inches on either side. This is not padding. It is construction: a cantilevered sleeve cap that holds its line without interior bulk. The silhouette appeared in the Spring 2024 collection and has sharpened through Pre-Fall. It reads as neither masculine nor borrowed. It reads as deliberate.

The house showed this most clearly in a double-breasted blazer in navy wool gabardine. The shoulder extended in a clean horizontal, no slope, no rounding. The sleeve hung straight from that edge. When the model walked, the jacket moved as one piece—no separation between body and arm. Hedi Slimane has used extended shoulders before, but those were built on a narrow frame. This is wider at the root. The body underneath can be slim or not. The jacket does the work.

What Changed

Celine's tailoring from 2019 through 2022 favoured a natural shoulder or a soft one. The jackets were narrow through the chest, sleeves set close. That line came from menswear: the 1960s Mod suit, the French rocker's leather jacket. It worked because it was tight everywhere. Shoulder, waist, hip—all compressed.

The new construction loosens the body but holds the shoulder. A wool crepe blazer from the Fall 2024 collection has a relaxed fit through the torso, no waist suppression, but the shoulder remains architectural. The sleeve head is still low. The extension is still there. The jacket can move, but the frame does not collapse. This is a different kind of structure. It does not depend on fit at the waist to hold its shape.

The same principle appears in outerwear. A double-face cashmere coat from Pre-Fall 2024 has the extended shoulder and the dropped sleeve cap, but the body is loose enough to layer a blazer underneath. The shoulder stays readable. It does not get lost in volume. That is the point. The shoulder is the silhouette.

How It Sits

The low sleeve cap changes how the arm moves. A traditional set sleeve is sewn at the natural shoulder point, and the fabric follows the curve of the deltoid. This creates ease, which allows the arm to lift. Celine's sleeve head sits lower, so there is less ease. The arm moves, but the sleeve does not rotate with it as much. The jacket holds its line.

This is not restrictive in practice. The fabrics are soft—wool crepe, cashmere, silk-lined gabardine. The body of the jacket has room. But the shoulder itself is fixed. It is a frame that does not shift.

The effect is most visible in motion. A model in the Spring 2024 show wore a black blazer with this shoulder over a slip dress. When she turned, the jacket stayed square. The dress moved underneath. The contrast made both pieces clearer.

The Sleeve

The sleeve is doing something specific. It is cut wider at the bicep than a traditional tailored sleeve, but it narrows sharply at the forearm. This taper starts just below the elbow. By the wrist, the sleeve is slim enough to show the shape of the arm.

Slimane used a similar taper in his Saint Laurent tailoring, but the proportion was different. Those sleeves were tight from shoulder to wrist. Celine's version gives room where the arm bends, then pulls in. It is more considered. It also makes the extended shoulder look intentional rather than oversized. The sleeve is not wide because the jacket is too big. It is wide because it is cut that way.

The Trouser

The trousers that appear with this tailoring are mid-rise and straight through the leg. They sit just below the natural waist. The leg is not wide, not narrow—twelve to thirteen inches at the hem for a size 38. This is a reset from the low-rise slim trouser Celine showed in earlier collections, but it is not a swing to volume. The proportion is calibrated to the jacket. A wide shoulder over a slim leg would look unbalanced. A wide shoulder over a wide leg would flatten. This is neither.

The trouser also has a pressed centre crease, which is new for the house. Slimane's trousers at Saint Laurent were often flat-front with no crease. Celine's crease is sharp. It runs from waistband to hem. It reinforces the vertical line, which counters the horizontal shoulder.

What It Means

This is not a borrowed silhouette. It is not pulling from menswear or from an archive. It is built for now: a jacket that holds structure without stiffness, that extends the shoulder without adding weight. It works because it is specific. The shoulder is two inches past the bone. The sleeve cap is a half-inch low. Those measurements matter. They are the difference between a shape and a costume.
