Versace is narrowing the shoulder

Keiko Tanaka··4 min

Versace is narrowing the shoulder. Not eliminating it — the house has never believed in elimination — but pulling it inward by two centimetres, maybe three. The result is a sleeve head that sits closer to the natural shoulder point, a gentler slope from neck to arm, and a silhouette that reads as constructed without announcing construction.

This showed first in the Spring/Summer 2024 collection. The tailored jackets — single-breasted, notch lapel, mostly in black or ivory — had shoulder pads, but they were thin. Quarter-inch foam, not the stacked felt that defined the house through the Nineties. The jackets still had presence. They simply achieved it through cut rather than volume. Donatella Versace has said in past seasons that she wants clothes that move with the body. This is the shoulder that does that.

By Fall/Winter 2024, the approach had spread. The leather blazers in that collection — some cropped to the natural waist, some longer — carried the same narrow shoulder. So did the coats. A double-breasted wool coat in charcoal, shown over a slip dress, had a shoulder line so clean it looked almost like knitwear from a distance. Up close: tailored canvas, pad-stitched lapels, full internal structure. The narrowness was a choice, not a shortcut.

The Pre-Fall 2025 lookbook confirms the direction. Versace is now applying this shoulder to evening wear. A black crepe blazer worn over a column gown has a shoulder that ends exactly where the bone ends. No overhang. No drama in the form of width. The drama comes from the way the fabric falls from that narrow point — a long, uninterrupted line from shoulder to hem. The eye moves vertically, not horizontally.

What Changed

Versace built its reputation on the opposite silhouette. The Nineties collections — the ones that made the house a fixture in popular memory — used the shoulder as architecture. Gianni Versace cut jackets with wide, squared shoulders that framed the torso and turned the upper body into geometry. That approach carried into the early years of Donatella's tenure. Even as recently as 2019, the house was showing blazers with shoulders that extended a full inch past the natural line.

The shift began quietly. The Resort 2023 collection included a few jackets with softer shoulders, but they were outnumbered by the wider cuts. By Spring/Summer 2024, the ratio had flipped. The narrow shoulder was now the default, and the wider cuts had disappeared.

This is not about minimalism. Versace is still using gold hardware, still showing Medusa-head buttons, still working in saturated colour. A fuchsia blazer from the Fall/Winter 2024 collection has the narrow shoulder, and it is no less Versace for it. The house is separating silhouette from decoration. The decoration remains. The silhouette is quieter.

Why It Works Now

The narrow shoulder aligns with what other houses are doing, but Versace arrives at it differently. Bottega Veneta has been working with a dropped, rounded shoulder for several seasons — a shoulder that suggests ease, even limpness. The Versace shoulder is still structured. It simply stops where the body stops.

This makes it compatible with current proportions elsewhere in the wardrobe. The mid-rise trouser, which has replaced the low-rise and the high-rise as the neutral option, pairs naturally with a narrow shoulder. So does the longer skirt. A wide shoulder over a long skirt creates a triangle. A narrow shoulder over the same skirt creates a column. Versace is choosing the column.

The house is also responding to how tailoring is worn now. A blazer is less likely to be worn as part of a suit and more likely to be worn over something unstructured — a slip dress, a ribbed tank, denim. The narrow shoulder makes that pairing easier. It does not compete with what is underneath.

The Technical Shift

Cutting a narrow shoulder requires different internal support. A wide shoulder can rely on the pad to hold the shape. A narrow shoulder has to rely on the canvas and the sleeve head. Versace is using a higher armhole to achieve this — the armscye sits closer to the underarm, which allows the sleeve to move without pulling the shoulder seam forward.

This is visible in the way the jackets photograph. In earlier collections, a model standing with arms at her sides would show a smooth, unbroken shoulder line. In the recent collections, there is a slight gather at the sleeve head — not a pucker, but a controlled ease. That ease is deliberate. It allows the jacket to move when the arm lifts.

The narrow shoulder also changes how a jacket closes. With less width at the top, the eye moves to the waist. Versace is responding by cutting jackets that nip in sharply at the natural waist or that fall straight from the shoulder without shaping. Both options work because the shoulder is no longer the focal point.

What It Means

To wear Versace now is to wear a shoulder that does not announce itself. The house is still building structure, still using internal support, still cutting with precision. It is simply doing so in a way that sits closer to the body. For the next twelve months, that is the shape of confidence.
