The trench is not a complicated garment in theory. It is a raincoat with a belt, a storm shield, and epaulettes. But the difference between a trench that works and one that does not comes down to angles measured in millimetres. Burberry's Castleford facility in Yorkshire employs around 200 machinists, most of them women, many of them with decades of experience. The trench is not an easy garment to sew. Gabardine is tightly woven and does not take kindly to rework. If a seam is unpicked, the needle holes remain visible. The machinists work in sequence, each one responsible for a specific operation. One attaches the storm shield. Another sets the sleeves. A third topstitches the belt loops and tabs.
The topstitching is harder than it looks. Burberry uses a contrast thread — usually tan or red — which means every stitch is visible. The lines must be straight, evenly spaced, and consistent in tension. A machinist named Linda Marsh, who has been at Castleford since 1996, can topstitch a belt in four minutes without measuring. She does not use a guide. She watches the edge of the presser foot and keeps her hands steady.
Marsh learned to sew in a factory that made military uniforms. She joined Burberry when the company was still producing most of its outerwear in the UK, before the expansion into Asia. She has seen the trench evolve — lighter fabrics, slimmer cuts, new colourways — but the construction has not changed much. The coat still has 103 separate operations, and each one must be done in the correct order. If the storm shield goes on after the lining, the coat is unsalvageable.
The finishers
The final stage belongs to the finishers, who inspect each coat for loose threads, uneven hems, and any other defects that might have slipped through. This is not glamorous work. It is repetitive, detail-oriented, and requires a level of focus that most people cannot sustain for more than an hour. The finishers at Castleford work eight-hour shifts. They check an average of 40 coats per day.
A finisher named Joanne Clarkson has been doing this for 14 years. She can spot a skipped stitch from two metres away. Her job is to make sure that every trench that leaves the factory meets Burberry's quality standard, which is higher than most brands but not as high as bespoke. She uses a lint roller, a pair of scissors, and a steam iron. If she finds a problem that cannot be fixed on the line, the coat goes back to the machinists.
Clarkson does not consider herself a craftsman. She considers herself a quality controller. But the distinction is less clear than it sounds. A finisher who knows how a trench should look can catch errors that a machinist might miss — a collar that does not sit flat, a lining that pulls at the armhole. Clarkson has sent coats back for issues that would not be visible to a customer but would bother her. Burberry allows this. The company's quality standard is not based on what a customer will notice. It is based on what the finishers will accept.
What this means
The trench is still made in Castleford, though not all of them. Burberry produces some styles in Italy and Portugal, depending on fabric and volume. The company does not publish numbers, but the UK facility accounts for a significant portion of outerwear production. This is unusual. Most British brands moved manufacturing offshore decades ago. Burberry kept Castleford open, partly for heritage reasons and partly because the machinists there know how to handle gabardine.
The cutters, machinists, and finishers are not famous. They do not give interviews or appear in campaigns. But they are the reason a Burberry trench feels different from a trench made elsewhere. The coat's reputation rests on their ability to execute the same 103 operations, in the same order, to the same standard, thousands of times a year. This is not romantic. It is simply how good manufacturing works.
Holt is still in the fitting room, adjusting the sleeve. The designer has moved on to another coat. The toile will be unpicked, the pattern amended, and a new sample cut by the end of the week.
