The Alexander McQueen shoulder in 2026 is not soft
The Alexander McQueen shoulder in 2026 is not soft. It extends past the body's natural line by two to three centimetres, constructed with a cantilevered pad that holds its shape without the wearer inside. This is not the rounded, rolled shoulder of the last five years. It is architectural, and it arrived in force across the autumn/winter 2025 collection shown in Paris this past March.
Sarah Burton's final collections for the house, which ran through early 2023, favoured a sloped shoulder that sat close to the neck. The silhouette was intimate, almost medieval in its relationship to the body. Seán McGirr's first full collection for autumn/winter 2024 kept that line but began to sharpen the edge where sleeve met bodice. By spring/summer 2025, the shoulder had started to lift. The autumn/winter 2025 show made the shift unmistakable. Tailored coats opened the runway with shoulders that formed a clean horizontal plane, constructed from layered wool felt and horsehair canvas. The structure read even from the mezzanine.
This is not a retread of the power shoulder. The McQueen construction is narrower than the 1980s silhouette it inevitably recalls. The pad does not extend toward the bicep. It stops at the edge of the clavicle and drops vertically, creating a right angle that frames the torso without widening it. The effect is contained rather than expansive. In the tailoring that opened the autumn/winter 2025 show, this geometry appeared in double-breasted wool coats with pronounced lapels and a suppressed waist. The shoulder formed the apex of a triangle that tapered sharply through the ribs.
The same structure carried into eveningwear. A black silk faille gown from that collection, cut with a strapless bodice, used an internal shoulder yoke that sat above the wearer's natural shoulder line. The yoke was visible as a seam running parallel to the collarbone, a piece of engineering rendered as ornament. The gown's silhouette depended on that hidden frame. Without it, the dress would have been a column. With it, the dress had a roof.
McGirr has extended this approach across categories. The pre-fall 2025 collection, released in June, included leather biker jackets with the same cantilevered shoulder, this time built from multiple layers of hide stacked and stitched to hold the angle. A wool jersey knit from the same collection used a raglan sleeve with a padded cap, translating the structure into a softer hand. The spring/summer 2026 collection, shown in September, opened with tailored suiting in lightweight wool crepe. The shoulder remained, though the pad was thinner to accommodate the season. The line held.
This is deliberate repositioning. McQueen under Burton became known for a romantic vocabulary: lace, embroidery, volume gathered at the hip. McGirr has kept the craft but shifted the frame. The shoulder is the clearest signal of that shift. It references the house's archive—Lee McQueen's own tailoring in the 1990s often used a strong shoulder, particularly in the "Joan" collection from autumn/winter 1998—but it is not nostalgic. The construction techniques are different. The contemporary McQueen shoulder uses a modular pad system that allows for adjustment during fittings, a technical refinement that wasn't standard in the house's early tailoring.
The market has followed. Retailers report that McQueen tailoring is moving faster than it has in three years. The black wool double-breasted coat from autumn/winter 2025, priced at €3,200, sold through its first allocation in under two weeks at Dover Street Market London. The leather biker jacket from pre-fall, at €4,800, is on backorder. These are not entry-level pieces, and the sell-through suggests that the customer is buying the shoulder as much as the garment.
Other houses are watching. Balenciaga's autumn/winter 2025 collection, shown two weeks after McQueen, included tailored coats with a similar extended shoulder, though constructed with a foam pad rather than horsehair. The Demna version was wider and more exaggerated, closer to pastiche. The McQueen shoulder, by contrast, remains wearable. It fits through a doorway.
To dress in this silhouette for the next twelve months is to accept that your coat will not collapse when you take it off.
